Building Analog Synthesizers: An Exploration of Electronics & Sound
Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 9:30 PM (EDT)
Somerville, United States
Join us for an intense six-week introduction to analog electronics through an exploration of sound. This will be a hands-on workshop where you will build a variety of sound-generating and -manipulating circuits. Though this process, you will learn enough about analog electronics to be able to continue with similar work independently. You will leave not only with a number of basic signal generators, but with an entire small modular synth system.
Expected Class Outcomes:
- Ability to read a schematic
- Ability to breadboard electronics from schematics
- Ability to solder and build circuits from scratch
- An understanding of Ohm's Law and how it applies to analog circuits, as well as an understanding of the various component parts
- A number of signal generators, filters, effects, and synth modules will have been built
- An understanding of how to properly mix audio safely, and how to trigger sounds with other inputs.
All materials will be provided, and an $80 materials cost is included in the class fee.
What to Bring:
A copy of Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking. The class will work from the exercises in this book, and build upon it as a base for later projects.
Jimmie Rodgers has been circuitbending since 2007. He's given talks at various hacker conferences about circuitbend, and has taught hundreds how to do it. His bent instruments have lasted through years of abuse on the road, and from giving performances. He has also performed with a number of musicians with his creations.
